In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
The LORD is able to get the attention of anyone, and can do it in a way that will never be forgotten. This is what Belshazzar and his partying companions quickly discovered.
Unbeknownst to those that indulged their flesh, their wicked ways were nearing the end. In the midst of their celebration, the LORD sent a message to disrupt the sensual feast and fill the king’s heart with fear. Everyone was in awe as the defiant king trembled with uncontrollable anguish.
God had worked in a marvelous way.
The sudden appearance of the hand and writing took everyone by surprise. No warning signs preceded the message. God did not publicly announce His intentions and nobody expected or awaited a message from Him. Everyone was taken off guard, including the king.
This is a reminder of the swiftness of God’s judgment. In His Word, God warns sinners of their future state, eternal destruction and separation from Him. For the wages of sin is death. If unrepentant sinners choose to oppose God they will face His wrath, as Belshazzar did. It is important to remember that the LORD is able to delay judgment or, if He chooses, strike instantly.
Thankfully, the LORD also provides salvation to those that repent of their sin and believe on Jesus Christ.
Amazing. That’s about the best way to sum up what happened that night. It was unique. It never happened before and it has not occurred since. No wonder the king shook with fear while the banquet hall was overcome with silence. They witnessed one of the greatest events in human history.
The LORD is able to work in mighty ways. He can grab our attention through subtle changes in life or He can make us stop in awe with great works of wonder. God’s power is unlimited.
For this reason, all should fear the LORD.
Belshazzar was unable to read the writing that appeared on the wall of the banquet hall. But he knew it was important. It’s not every day that a hand suddenly appears, out of nowhere, and scrawls a note for all to read. It was clear that this message was from another world. Why send it? What did it mean? Belshazzar was confused and although the king did not believe in the LORD, he was certain the unknown writing contained a message.
With God, nothing is done by accident. He is a God of order. The writing on the wall pronounced judgment upon Belshazzar and Babylon. They were accountable for their sin. That night the king was slain and the city fell to the invading army of the Persians.
The LORD’S message can still be found in this world, albeit not on walls of banquet halls. Today we find God’s message in His Word. The Bible is God’s revealed will for mankind. It warns of the impending judgment awaiting sinners but also of God’s salvation through His Son Jesus Christ.
Read the Bible. Obey it.
