The Book of Esther
The Book of Esther is an important piece of literature concerning events within the Persian Empire during the sixth century B.C. Many believe Mordecai was the author due to the detailed account of affairs at the Persian palace. Mordecai, an official of the kingdom and the author of a royal letter, would possess great knowledge and understanding of all that transpired. The book of Esther appears to be an official record, which would explain the absence of God’s name. The events in the book occurred between 515-508 BC, placing the record between the sixth and seventh chapters of Ezra, following the completion of the second temple. (Ezra 6:15) The book was written from a historical perspective and gives a glimpse of Jewish life in Persia following their captivity.
The Book of Esther has had many critics. The book has been attacked because God’s name is never mentioned, but the Lord’s providential care for His people is evident. Some doubt its credibility because the events seem improbable; however, with that logic the entire Bible can be cast aside. It must be remembered that with God all things are possible. Sadly, and with a bit of pride and selfishness, many Gentiles have had little or no use for the book of Esther because it concerns the Jewish nation. That may be true, but the divine truths and powerful lessons within the book should not casually be discarded. This book depicts a bitter battle that is still being waged today. The devil, with all his might, attempted to destroy the Jews, but God, with His divine power and wisdom, provided for their protection. This book is highly regarded amongst the Jewish people and accepted as scripture. It is read with great joy and has been a comfort for them through many hardships.
The book of Esther honors and glorifies God. The Lord worked through Esther and Mordecai to protect the Jewish people from destruction. God Almighty began to work even before His people realized there was a problem and enabled them to overcome their enemies. The book of Esther is a testimony to God and His Divine power.
