Power of Christ Displayed

But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. Mark 5:6-8

What unfolds before us in this passage of scripture is one of the greatest events in the history of the world. God’s Son, Jesus Christ, confronted evil spirits concerning possession of a man. This is what Jesus Christ came to do, set men and women free from the power of the devil.

Upon recognizing Jesus as God’s Son the evil spirits spoke with respect, it was probably more flattery than reverence. They knew Jesus Christ’s power and dreaded the judgment He could declare. Hoping to avoid this judgment, and to remain where welcome, they begged Jesus to let them inhabit the swine in the area. Their request was granted and Jesus directed them to leave the man, which they did.

There are two facts that stand out concerning this meeting.

Strength of Christ – the evil spirits displayed a great respect for Jesus Christ. They addressed Him as the Son of the Most High God and bowed before Him while begging for leniency. It’s clear they were powerless before Jesus Christ.

Submission to Christ – when Jesus Christ directed they obeyed. Without delaying or debating the evil spirits left the man and entered into the swine. No doubt about it, God’s Son was in charge.

Jesus Christ delivered this man from the clutches of the evil spirits, reminding us that with Christ all things are possible.  Nobody is more powerful and nothing is greater than our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
